22: There were complications
She doesn’t want to believe it but the reality sets in heavier each time she lets out a muffled sob. ‘Complications’ was putting it nicely; it’s not like they even tried to save him. This burning pain built up in her chest won’t cool down and she curls into a tighter ball, her face pushed into a pillow and soaked with too many tears.
Her body trembles with her cries, not noticing or caring to notice the other presence now in the room, beside her and asking with a heavy concern and a soft touch what was wrong. It’s hard to form words. It’s hard to do anything right now but she can hardly breathe and when she pulls her face from the pillow, face soaked and eyes redder than the fire he used to burn, she manages somehow; to speak.
❝ I-I didn’t even.. I-I.. d-didn’t thank him for.. everything.. I-I should’ve.. done something to help I.. ❞
They’re spilling from her eyes again and she hasn’t even said the hardest part yet. Hasn’t given Asami the bad- no, the worst news.
She chokes out as much as she can, through the longest minutes of her life; seeing every image of him in her mind as she speaks it. She sees him from the first day they’d met, the first fight they had, the first kiss, the hugs, the laughs. It all plays back to her when she says that
❝ ..Mako is dead. ❞
